Thread: HP G60 Win Vista won't boot properly (off & on)

hello friends:

here's situation: have friend's laptop (hp g60 32 bit windows vista) trying diagnose/troubleshoot. mentioned in thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1961591 ; same machine) had hard drive errors (bad sectors , temp. control) found running several scans (badblocks, gsmartmon, fsck, etc.) after cloning image clonezilla & wiping disc (zeroed dban), restored image original internal drive , ran tests again came clean. mentioned in linked thread, there continuous bios beep while windows freezes on black screen white text reading "windows loading files" loading bar. beep persists , loading makes no progress.

"newly" wiped machine worked week, , occurred again. have run aforementioned testes again , disk comes clean. makes me wonder. had thought bios beep hard drive error; upon looking (http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm) perhaps it's loose ram? though have run both memory (ram) , hdd tests came clean. google query of "hp vista stuck @ windows loading files beeps" yielded site suggested reseat drive. since passed aforementioned tests, wouldn't have connected though?

next instinct was possibly boot-sector virus. downloaded avast! linux 32 bit on live usb , ran. found 10-something viruses (with java in file path name, thought odd.) deleted , set restore point. (oh, also, windows restore/recovery should supposedly "automatically fix boot errors" fails work.) reimaged drive , wiping internal hdd. (which, think it, dumb; thought perhaps viruses infected other areas, wiping disc might help, after deleted files avast! detected. imaging disc still transfer current state of system (including possible viruses) when reloaded it, wouldn't it?)

i'm not sure how proceed. viewing system diagnostics logs (pressed esc access boot menu chose diagnostics.) showed error code of 0603. not sure if windows' or hp's code. little find on it, suggested might hdd related. again, hdd passed tests. (i'm supposed it/information systems major in college; seems pathetic. oh well, guess guys plenty of google-ing well.)

warranty long expired open , try reseating hdd , ram if help. however, seem boot fine (occasionally.) i'm not sure if see if solved problem. instance, last time gave her, worked week before acting again.

have ubuntu , ultimate boot cd (with partedmagic) on live usbs, unable pinpoint specific problem(s) yet.

suggestions?

in advance , sorry length. wonderful community.

reseated hdd. can't quite ram out yet.
