Thread: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS stops at splash screen on HP notebook
hardware: hp pavilion dv1000 notebook (model dv16010us) 1 gb ram
os: windows xp ubuntu desktop 12.04 lts precise pangolin installed second operating system using windows installer wubi www.ubuntu.org.
problem: boot freezes @ splash screen.
after completing installation , booting machine, selecting "ubuntu" (versus windows) @ microsoft multiboot screen, ubuntu splash screen appears , dots start cycle couple minutes, freeze. keyboard unresponsive. power cycle necessary reboot.
diagnosis: after rebooting , freezing couple times, selected second ubuntu boot option (recovery console) , watched text messages scroll during boot process. stopped on section message visiting wireless.kernel.org.
apparent cause: broadcom wireless firmware not installed.
workaround: install broadcom firmware package.
process:
- attach notebook router using ethernet rj45 cable.
- boot, select ubuntu @ microsoft multiboot, type 'e' when grub screen appears (acting beat timeouts).
- a screen appears can edit gnu grub boot script single boot.
- on "linux" line (second bottom), add "b43.blacklist=true" end of line.
- type ctrl-x or f10 continue booting.
- wait while notebook boots. login password set during install.
- press ctrl-alt-t terminal window.
- enter command: sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
- wait 10 minutes while package installs. patient--there periods of apparent inactivity.
- when terminal window returns prompt, enter command: exit. terminal window closes.
- use session menu (gear , 1 icon) @ right of top bar shutdown.
- disconnect ethernet cable.
- boot ubuntu. log in.
- configure wireless network (empty pie wedge on top bar)--enter ssid, passphrase, , forth (wireless configuration not covered here).
