Thread: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS stops at splash screen on HP notebook

hardware: hp pavilion dv1000 notebook (model dv16010us) 1 gb ram
os: windows xp ubuntu desktop 12.04 lts precise pangolin installed second operating system using windows installer wubi www.ubuntu.org.

problem: boot freezes @ splash screen.
after completing installation , booting machine, selecting "ubuntu" (versus windows) @ microsoft multiboot screen, ubuntu splash screen appears , dots start cycle couple minutes, freeze. keyboard unresponsive. power cycle necessary reboot.

diagnosis: after rebooting , freezing couple times, selected second ubuntu boot option (recovery console) , watched text messages scroll during boot process. stopped on section message visiting wireless.kernel.org.

apparent cause: broadcom wireless firmware not installed.

workaround: install broadcom firmware package.
process:
  • attach notebook router using ethernet rj45 cable.
  • boot, select ubuntu @ microsoft multiboot, type 'e' when grub screen appears (acting beat timeouts).
  • a screen appears can edit gnu grub boot script single boot.
  • on "linux" line (second bottom), add "b43.blacklist=true" end of line.
  • type ctrl-x or f10 continue booting.
  • wait while notebook boots. login password set during install.
  • press ctrl-alt-t terminal window.
  • enter command: sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
  • wait 10 minutes while package installs. patient--there periods of apparent inactivity.
  • when terminal window returns prompt, enter command: exit. terminal window closes.
  • use session menu (gear , 1 icon) @ right of top bar shutdown.
  • disconnect ethernet cable.
  • boot ubuntu. log in.
  • configure wireless network (empty pie wedge on top bar)--enter ssid, passphrase, , forth (wireless configuration not covered here).
