Can I create a logo using a photograph for my product label?
i need on this.
you can, it's not advisable unless understand ramifications , can justify them.
the "logo" word has been cavalierly bantered in recent decades it's become meaningless.
a proper logo primary identity mark of business entity or product. it's cornerstone graphic. it's company's signature. it's sacred ground.
therefore, leaving design considerations aside, should meet highest technical standards, including reproduction consistency, robustness, , versatility.that far means line art consisting entirely of cleanly (painstakingly) optimized vector paths that:
- it can reliably reproduced @ practical reduction or enlargement no loss of quality.
- it can reliably reproduced in media; not print; not on web. company's business forms (letterhead, envelopes, business cards, invoices) bare basic beginning. should suitable promotional items (pens, plaques, etc.) electric sign on building. should suitable reproduction not in rgb , cmyk, in sign vinyl sheet metal.
and should unmistakeably recognizable in uses.
so (and wisely) rules out raster imaging essential part of logo proper. should consider limitations imposing on refer "logo."
it's not it's never done. example, household brand manufacturer may standardize upon raster image of idealized farm field integral element of product identity used on labels range of jams , jellies. corporate logo itself based on proper vector artwork, if stylized raster effects when printed in situations.
so there's difference between corporate identity , product identity, , there's difference between product logotype and product branding. example, recognize particular raster graphic 1 coming box of wheaties, content , stylistic treatment. same token, wheaties product logotype more unmistakeably recognized, entirely standing alone, no raster graphic whatsoever, whether etched on window glass or cast in bronze.
a logo should documented in acompanying identity style guide, defines specific usage details , forseen situations; print signage, vehicle graphics embroidered golf shirts to....
if graphic dependent upon raster images, gratuitous "effects," and/or color uniqueness, message, or recognition, designer should go drawing board.
so sure, can want, long can customer buy it. question whether (or he) should.
