Thread: external hard drives locking up desktop at post
hello, apologies if in wrong place. have annoying , persistent issue external hard drives. somehow, when external hard drives connected , powered, hangs pc @ boot splash screen, screen see bios boots , finds everything. takes minute or before it'll pass on booting main hard drive.
solution far power down drives before rebooting , heres kicker. boots fine drives powered , attached cold startup not when reboot. don't understand this. kick in rear, seems on pc different drive.
question is, causes this? there firmware or bios update need or gonna have power down every time reboot?
stats; 500gb wd mybook, 2tb wd mystudio, 1tb wd hdd. asus p5qc mobo, 8 gigs of ram, 750gb wd internal hdd. have pata/sata usb adaptor doesn't seem affected , occasionally, usb flash drive hang it. seems affected upon waking standby. please shed light on this.
cold booting , rebooting similar, not quite same procedure.
wild guess:
maybe bios set boot usb before internal hdd, if have bootable usb drive, boot it, , if have usb drive data 'only' fail. might not understand should try internal drive, after has failed booting usb drive.
if problem, should key enter bios menu, , check/change boot order. there information during 1 or 2 seconds key right after booting/rebooting.
