Thread: How do you change Xubuntu file manager and other program defaults?

i want replace default file browser thunar nautilus, ability change program default (programs launch file type well) seems missing in settings manager. have downloaded nautilus , works in xubuntu, , need way make default when system-installed home , file-system icons clicked (as launchers created , able modify "nautilus home" in command line), files displayed through nautilus, not thunar.

when went looking how-to, found this, @
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1081044
gksu gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-handler.desktop
find line says: exec=thunar %u
change to: exec=nautilus --no-desktop %u

instructions may have worked when post went in 2009 did not apparently apply when tried on current xubuntu. cut , pasted line terminal, called for, there no response command.

investigated, using gksu nautilus. not find under /usr/share/applications files name similar "folder-handler-desktop", , although have been using nautilus, nothing of nautilus seen in directory! grateful if can explain happened here xubuntu file tree, seems relatively straightforward tweak - if can still done in different folder somewhere, i'd have option.

upon taking closer @ items contained in /usr/share/applications, saw appears of items shown in "settings manager" on xubuntu bottom panel, plus many make me wonder why weren't included part of launcher. interesting, , i'd know more too. among these items saw "preferred applications", 2 of them actually, , 1 of them gave me opportunity switch, under utilities tab, thunar nautilus "debian x terminal emulator". problem doesn't work - default place links on desktop (which somehow differently set launchers myself can make or delete) still use thunar, not nautilus. doing wrong here?

next, found idea, thought run folks here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/74534/set-nautilus-as-default-file-manager-in-xubuntu

wow, looks spin wheels here, install more software right software launch! gurus think of this?

thanks.

i've got pcmanfm set default file manager in xubu 12.04. here's how:

first installed pcmanfm synaptic package manager.

next right-clicked desktop, applications -> settings -> settings manager -> clicked on preferred applications, utilities tab (see screenshot) select new file manager default.

done.
