Thread: Howto: Convert Debian/XFCE to LMDE/XFCE
i converted debian testing (wheezy) xfce linux mint debian edition xfce. it's rather simple procedure.
have no problems wheezy, on contrary, fabulous. need upgrade systems of ubuntu lucid users. i've been playing around precise/unity a few months , decided still not mature , contains commercial bloat. what's more tired of reinstalling ubuntu releases on number of computers every few years. decided upgrade computers lmde, because rolling distro , makes use of upgrade packs (in wheezy upgrading n00b). means have run lmde on own computer, because change apt-configuration , other configuration , , ssh/rsync other boxes (yes, in virtulabox too).
here's how it:
change /etc/apt/sources.list. delete debian repos , add following mint repos:
code:deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ testing main contrib non-free deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security/ testing/updates main contrib non-free deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia/ testing main non-free
create /etc/apt/preferences file following content:
modify /etc/lsb-release this:code:package: * pin: release o=linuxmint pin-priority: 700 package: * pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com pin-priority: 700 package: * pin: release o=debian pin-priority: 500
update package database, install linuxmint keyring , mint packages (i use sudo can use "su -" of course):code:distrib_id=linuxmint distrib_release=1 distrib_codename=debian distrib_description="linux mint xfce edition"
(mintupdate-debian needs python webkit)code:sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install linuxmint-keyring sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install --reinstall synaptic sudo apt-get install mint-artwork-debian mint-artwork-xfce mint-backgrounds-debian mint-backgrounds-xfce mint-common mint-info-xfce mint-translations mint-x-icons mint-x-theme mintconfig-xfce mintdesktop-xfce mintsystem mintupdate-debian python-webkit
fire synaptic , search 'mint' see if there's more mintstuff might want install. mint software center called mintinstall. ubuntu based software-center doesn't seem work on lmde (importerror: no module named linuxmint).
wheezy has newer libraries lmde. during upgrades might encounter broken packages depend on older libraries. if happens try uninstall such libary , reinstall it. reinstall older lmde version.
