Thread: After upgrading to 12.04, my CPU gets locked on I/O load of 45+ after 12 hours.

i'm getting frustrated latest upgrade 12.04.

i've been using ubuntu on machine since 10.10 beta, , apart few glitches everythings been ok. ubuntu life nightmare.

had severe nvidia problems may have managed resolve driver upgrade. seem have second problem seems non nvidia related.

if boot machine , leave no apps running on desktop, switch terminal ctrl+alt+f6 , leave top running, cpu load average gradually increase. morning saw load average of 45, 1 zombie process , 100% of cpu in "wa" (i/o wait) state. command console basic diagnostic information, if attempted kill processes (e.g. kill -9 compiz) system freeze.

make things worse software raid system , doesn't take being rebooted. takes 16 hours every reboot (even alt+sysrq) resync drives isn't helping load average either.

i've rebooted again , drives resyncing , things seem relatively happy - no zombie proceess, near 0% wa cpu, know it's matter of time.

processes seem sucking cpu md2_raid/md2_resync, mythbackend , compiz.

feel close figuring 1 out (at least can see i'm doing now!) feel stumped check. if see zombie process 1 causing 100% i/o load, or have got cause , effect reversed? diagnosing rules of thumb if system has massive i/o load?
