Thread: Can't login into Ubuntu after an upgrade to Precise Pangolin(12.04)

hello everybody!

after 4 years has happened first time googling problem got me nowhere.
thing yesterday upgraded ubuntu 11.10 12.04. upgrade went smoothly. did restart , strange things started happen.
after each upgrade set ubuntu automatic login(been upgrading 10.04 until without fresh installation, 64-bit). expected yesterday login window appeared. first thing caught eye lines below user name. "no value has been set". think self ok, strange nothing special.
type in password usual. , big one: "invalid password, please try again"!

time on tried couple of things:
1. tried different passwords. use same password ubuntu still gave shot.
2. default language in ubuntu english. different keyboard layout has slovenian layout(i come slovenia why). has been problem before our slovenian layout keyboard , english os don't cooperate should. reason ubuntu password has numbers , english letters. tried on screen keyboard in ubuntu click way through login. no succes.
3. go , think upgrade perhaps messed password. first thing change it. followed these instructions (https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/user-forgottenpassword.html) that. first through grub. after typing in "passwd myusername" got puzzling response. terminal said:
"passwd: authentication token manipulation error
passwd: password unchanged"
filesystem state read/write because used fsck option before going root. tried second option livecd. erased password shadow still no success logging in ubuntu.

there thing guest session account. no matter option choose (ubuntu, ubuntu 2d....) , click log in nothing happens. screen goes blank 3 seconds, hard disk makes noise , login screen comes on.

don't know next. have dual-boot system , win7 boots without problems. ubuntu 11.04 runs great livecd. did memtest sure , there no errors. kind of not hardware problem.

if require further information or if unclear please let me know!
