Thread: Upgrade 12.04 - weirdest situation
hello!
situation follows. fiance owns hp laptop - around 4 years old. decided click yes when asked upgrade version 12.04.
, 300+kms away.
previous version - believe - 11.10.
after installation laptop rebooted , nothing happened. black screen etc.
mentioned in recovery mode effect pretty same, though time there output before black screen nothing. last information spotted apparently "failed create pty" rather weird.
called her, navigated through grub , here able remotely determine:
the
"initrd /boot/initrd.img-...-generic" line disappeared.
"linux /boot/vmlinuz-..." line referred vmlinuz version without corresponding "initrd.img-..." file in /boot folder. tried following combinations:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.?-?-generic ... (i don't recall specific version atm)
initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-17-generic (latest found in /boot folder)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-17-generic ...
initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-17-generic
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-11-generic ...
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-11-generic
in place of ... there original parameters passed kernel.
no effect each.
suggestions? or should download latest ubuntu 12.04 iso , reinstall (in theory simplest/fastest combination has desktop disposal)?
- possibly reason disappearance of "initrd ..." line? confirmed issue sent ma photo of screenline disappeared previous ubuntu versions option in grub.
hardware should able handle ubuntu 12.04 - intel core 2 duo 2.0 ghz, 3 gb memory. if reason gpu relevant x3100 integrated.
forget line missing right now, file in /boot folder? can check?
latest (with highest number) combination of both vmlinuz , initrd.img present in /boot?
sounds went wrong upgrade. it's if think clean reinstall best. lets see few things, , if doesn't work, can reinstall without wasting time troubleshooting.
