Adjusting highlights doesn't affect my clips, but midtones and shadows both do. How can I fix this?

i started working speedgrade part of workflow ran issues today when making adjustments. under "look", changing settings under "highlights" has 0 affect on clip being graded. however, when able make adjustments on "shadows", "midtones", , "overall". there i'm missing here?

well, depends if image have data in highlights. can see tonal range in shadows, midtones , highlights tabs using gray-out toggle (at right). if in highlights using gray-out in white-black mode can't see white (the tonal range corresponding highlights), there isn't values in range , normal controls in panel not work.
