Thread: Gnome Shell ignoring gconf-editor and button placement

i upgraded 10.04 12.04 , getting used gnome shell. have read plenty of documentation on changing button layout in windows via gconf-editor or gconftool, , have gone /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/button_layout in attempt close, minimize , maximize on left. however, regardless of put there, setting disregarded , every window's controls still on right after restarting gnome-shell.

have tried changing key both gconf-editor , gconftool via command line:

code:
$ gconftool --type string --set /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/button_layout "close,minimize,maximize:" $ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/button_layout close,minimize,maximize:
any tips?

fwiw, happens on second machine, upgraded 11.04 11.10 12.04.
