Thread: Password trouble

i new ubuntu , (today in fact) installed ubuntu 12.04. don't using password log in tried disable it. not being smart obviously, clicked on power button in top right corner , clicked system settings. went user accounts. don't remember how did because earlier morning , doing 100 things @ once set new computer (or felt like).

hour , half ago tried download , install skype. prompted me password. typed in. there no way have forgot it, use everything. know if not smart thing do. regardless, said wrong. went account settings before , can't anything. says there isn't password. password: none. , if try change that, asked me password, new password, etc etc. continue button faded , won't let me reset password.

followed forums on website had me reboot recovery mode (which took me time find out had hold "shift" while booting.) go drop root shell prompt, , type passwd [username] , type in new password. failed well, , won't let me different password.

here am, know idea going on? thank in advance.
