Thread: Dual booting UEFI equipped notebook - Acer Aspire 5560

note: applies systems windows not running in efi mode, wager of them, running in efi mode seems result in unstable boot behavior, @ least on platforms.

i've spent rough couple days getting system , running, , in forum searches spotted couple other people having issues this, thought i'd put in 2 cents on matter.

basically, issue first ran started rapid descent madness when installing ubuntu alongside pre-installed windows 7, grub wouldn't show , windows os boot.

after trial , error, , kicking computer out m-f-ing window, deduced ubuntu installer running in uefi mode, , installing grub boot way. problem there disk needs set correctly efi boot partition , guid partition table - neither of in place, pre-installed windows running in bios emulation mbr partition table.

simple solution force ubuntu install in bios emulation (no switches in system setup force it) renaming "efi" directory @ root of ubuntu liveusb stick. allows install grub master boot record way god intended , let coexist existing mbr-partitioned windows install, regular dual-boot setup.

you'll know if ubuntu installer loading in bios emulation if normal purple screen accessibility , keyboard icons @ bottom. in uefi mode, loads black , white grub menu.


possible working dual-boot in uefi, @ least on system, results in machine freezing every other boot , @ shutdown. i've found googling around fixes, there number of other systems exhibit similar instabilities when booting in uefi mode.

couldn't figure out how dual booting, that's been going right years (even efi computers), went wrong.

diagnosed problem lenovo g580. has uefi setup windows 8, has windows 7 installed, , isn't using uefi mode.

linux installer clever enough see uefi setup, not setup not being used. renaming efi folder on live usb hides installer, , forces working install.

hi, relatively new linux (have used many live disks) , have had install of ubuntu 12.04 few days now. part have found easy use , have been comfortable it. have first question can't resolve myself: adding googles repository list. when first ran command supplied google found did not have wget installed. used apt-get install it. worked fine (as far can tell) re-ran googles code : wget -q https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub -o- | sudo apt-key add -deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free , message 'gpg: conflicting commands' tell me going wrong , how fix please new script : wget -q https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub -o- | sudo apt-key add linux_signing_key.pub need edit /etc/apt/sources.list , add line @ end deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free end hope find usefull edit: need root or use sudo make changes /etc/apt/sour...
