Thread: Wd elements no longer opens.

have been using wd elements 1 tb external hd on 10 months , wd elements 2 tb external hd 4 months; plugging in weekly backup data.

whilst using u 11.04 os.

1 week ago, backing items 2tb unit, copy process stopped , noticed external hd icon on dash had vanished , seemed intermittently re-appear...then not re-appear had disconnect without safely remove option.

tried same usb cable/power unit 1tb try , that; since needed space on pc....but same problem occurred copying data , had remove without safely remove option.

when tried start 1tb again got following alert on screen;

error mounting: mount exited exit code 13: $mftmirr not match $mft (record 0).
failed mount '/dev/sdb1': input/output error
ntfs either inconsistent, or there hardware fault, or it's a
softraid/fakeraid hardware. in first case run chkdsk /f on windows
then reboot windows twice. usage of /f parameter very
important! if device softraid/fakeraid first activate
it , mount different device under /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). please see 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

technical novice ignorant above means installing 2tb produced same alert, , after swapping usb , power units; stuck 2 apparently unusable externals on 2tb data between them; fear might have been lost.

copied alert , sent wd support replied stating if had used linux system not products designed windows os; though retailers informed me work on linux systems , proved correct, without reformating needed, plug in , use, , year 1tb.

can advise me next please?

the fact both of them same thing indicates either corruption in system or problem on system has corrupted both filesystems. or, have hardware problem computer , usb ports no longer working.

way figure out change different things , see if able access drives.

first, have other computer can plug these drives into? if drives work ok on computer, drives fine.

if don't have computer, have original ubuntu live cd can boot on computer? if can boot that, see if drives work there. if do, again there's corrupt in ubuntu installation.

if find out drives corrupted (because don't work on computer) either, running windows chkdsk /f message describes might idea. having access windows computer help. may able download/burn western digital diagnostic disk website , see if can boot , use test out drives.

final thought: kind of power drives plugged into? power strip? can try different power plug, fun? it's possible guess power supplies have failed or got zapped power surge (were both plugged in time if drives not on?). there lot of possibilities issue, of course!
