Graphic styles + pattern creator

i finished series of characters, heavily styled using handmade textures applied via illustrator's graphic styles. goal create pattern motifs using characters, illustrator won't allow patterns created using artwork that's filled other patterns. thought expand fills, isn't working either. missing something?

you need expand them , after rid of clipping masks.

 

that's lot trickier. if there no strokes inside patterns, can try pathfinder crop
