Thread: CUPS-PDF trouble - printed pages disappear

i had been using cups-pdf fine, got in habit of exporting things pdf instead of printing them. 1 day (and couple upgrades later) tried print pdf , error cups-pdf didn't exist. re-installed cups-pdf, didn't help. deleted pdf printer system settings , added in. can print test pages , go /home/pdf directory should. when printing within application, however, chugs along should, document not in folder. tried search , new pdfs don't exist. upgraded system couple days ago. running latest ubuntu studio.

ideas?

i posting in thread although cups-pdf has generated many other discussions elsewhere. various suggestions have been made respect file permissions, selinux, apparmor, etc. case, tried several until finding "the main thing". i'm tired retrace steps , see if of other suggestions needed, problem found show-stopper.

distributed, /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf allows path gs default /usr/bin/gs , not correct on 11.10 system. following diff of change did trick me:

> ghostscript /usr/local/bin/gs

clues may have problem found in /var/log/cups/cups-pdf_log after setting logtype 7 in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf. check log file debug line showing how gs invoked , confirm path "/usr/bin/gs". if you, me, have system path should "/usr/local/bin/gs", pdf print fail full stop. clue [debug] line right after invoking gs looks (i have made important phrase bold):

{your date , time} [debug] output file unlinked (/{whatever home directory is}/pdf/{whatever outputfile name gs})

output file being deleted because gs invocation failed (silently, far cups-pdf_log file concerned ).

finally, see in log file:

[error] failed set file mode pdf file (non fatal) {your output file name}

i'm amused cups records non-fatal in "it didn't work". while true file mode not set, not permission problem as it's problem of trying set permissions on non-existent file .

spent lot of time on problem , never found post came conclusion. hope saves trouble.

i have been searching time way edit metadata of video file created along de-novo file. specifically, vlc example, displays metadata text when begins playing file. trying access to. seems me, if there way create metadata in first place, there *must* way edit it. how? using either 11.04 or 12.04 kubuntu. nautilus it's nice icon displays of photos , vids. typically use gwenview , gimp photos , vlc , avidemux video. these tools work things, occasionally, there video has wrong or verbose metadata , far have found no way edit stuff. vlc has option purports work in cases, not reliable, looking swiss-army-knife solution can handle multiple formats (avi/wmv/mpg/mp4/etc/etc) in manner exfalso audio files. "ffmpg" command-line tool not work way, may part of app does. there video geek out there in ubu-land has known solution? folks use create these files in first place? thanks, ct use c...
