How do I cut the background out of an image properly?

ok have photo of me , son put on "about" page on website, cut background out using background eraser tool, , looks great on website, if put on black background can see of pixels should have been erased have not been, have spent hour cutting out image, there faster more efficient way of doing in future?

- see have cut out of son's hair, , didn't best job cutting out image because don't have "steadiest" hand... whats best way in future, appreciated..

may sound lame, that's realyl 1 of "depends...." things. specific techniques vary image image , practice , experience tell when use methods , tools.
