Thread: Connecting 2nd monitor causes X server crash using Nvidia drivers in 12.04

i have secondary monitor connected acer aspire 8930 laptop. graphics card nvidia geforce 9600m gt (1gb).

setup worked fine in previous incarnations of ubuntu; installed recommended nvidia driver via "additional drivers" , able connect , use samsung monitor through hdmi output.

upgrade 12.04 (64 bit) has rendered impossible. switch on secondary monitor, x server (and entire system) crashes.

problem identical in both unity (3d , 2d) , gnome (gdm).

is, believe, nvidia drivers, connecting monitor without nvidia drivers installed not cause crash. in case, cloning screen work fine. suggest problem lie nvidia drivers, , not example hdmi port or that. however, isn't feasible solution, require nvidia drivers installed (video chopped carrots in casserole when played without nvidia drivers, , playing hd content out of question).

have tried both nvidia drivers available under "additional drivers"; problem identical both.

have clean installed 12.04 on system twice, ensure issue replicated after absolutely fresh install.

said, fine in 11.10. issue appears result of change between 11.10 , 12.04, i'm near able enough begin identify causing it.

basic system specs: acer aspire 8930g: intel core2 q9000, 4gb ddr3, geforce 9600m gt (1gb), 250gb seagate hd.

or advice appreciated.

bump. ideas anyone?
