Thread: Deleted User, need help getting them back

i accidentally deleted system user comes ubuntu named 'backup'. restored user using 'update-passwd' command worked great. 'backup' shows in /etc/passwd, , not /etc/shadow.

code:
derek@home-pc:~$ cat /etc/passwd | grep 'backup' backup:*:34:34:backup:/var/backups:/bin/sh
the asterisk '*' in second field tells me password not in /etc/shadow file.

, confirms it:

code:
derek@home-pc:~$ sudo cat /etc/shadow | grep 'backup' derek@home-pc:~$
i'm super anal, , make things right, meaningless user 'backup' is. how user fresh install configuration?

bump.
