Thread: one third of the screen unavailable

hello

i've installed xubuntu 12.04. went until ran update. of sudden, 1 third of screen became "unavailable": bottom one-third of screen, in other words, "covered" (sorry don't know how explain this) in white stripe. occasionally, colour of stripe changes slightly.

took screenshot...and screenshot doesn't show stripe (?) i'm wondering if it's computer needs replaced - motherboard issues, etc, or if might have software error, etc?

i'm attaching screenshot, in case. thank you.
attached images attached images

sounds might issue video card. card have , driver using? open terminal window , type in command more info:
code:
sudo lspci -vnn | grep -a10 vga
if have livecd, might worth booting see if problem persists.
