i have xbmc profile copied on shared folder laptop (running lucid 10.04) parent's desktop (also running lucid 10.04) , in copying lost ownership settings despite fact same user on both computers. how can set read , write permissions , ownership user account on copy made desktop?

sorry asking such noob question, i'm having brainfart , cannot make heads or tails of directions tried googling.

code:
chown user:group -r /path/to/directory
replace user:group user , group. replace xxx perm levels.
