hi, new ubuntu.
have been using windows7 these days. basically, keep secure, turn on auto updates, use microsoft security essentials, push uac control settings highest, disable browser cookies , use sandboxie when browse lot.
can mention basic tweaks ubuntu 12.04 ones we'd on win7 - firewall settings/ antivirus , supposed done basically.

small contribution: disable things don't need via start-up applications
now have list of applications applications start automagically. don't need them? disable them.code:sudo sed --in-place 's/nodisplay=true/nodisplay=false/g' *.desktop
<disable avahi deamon.
<enable ufw, strong outbound rules. see security sticky's.
<monitor system with:
code:netstat -taupencode:netstat -tulnplets discuss outcomecode:sudo lsof -n -p -i
