Thread: Yet another U/Win on separate disks question
setup:
* new 2 disk hp box ubuntu certified hardware.
* windows 7 on 1 disk , other empty.
* official hp recovery disks (didn't make them myself hp utility).
* official ubuntu v11.10 installation dvd.
problem:
install ubuntu on empty disk without modifying windows disk in way , without disconnecting windows disk (computer supplier may object, can't identify disk disconnect, disk connectors designed minimal manipulation).
prefered solution:
have windows boot loader on windows disk , grub on ubuntu disk. i'll set bios boot order os used more first boot. other os booted via startup boot menu easy invoke.
tech questions:
* if during installation ubuntu disk comes before windows disk in bios boot order ubuntu installer install boot loader on windows disk?
* if during installation windows disk disabled in bios ubuntu installer able access directly, i.e. not via bios?
* official website recommended 32-bit ubuntu , that's bought. mean ubuntu wouldn't able use ram above 4gb mark? slower?
lot!
well in answer question #3 ubuntu 32 bit comes pae kernel can access more 4 gigs of ram.
think other question depend upon bios in particular machine. should able install grub in root partition of ubuntu disk , not touch window mbr.
how ever may still need third party boot loader point it. don't see need grub works in booting windows , if me i'd allow boot manager.
cheers!
